The mayor turned surfer dude. Shamu the whale rode up in the elevator at The Antlers. A mermaid with a sparkly emerald tail swam the hallways. And flowered shirts bloomed everywhere.

A crowd of 380 draped themselves in fishing net and shells or wore their favorite tourist-on-the-beach wear - no Speedos or bikinis - for the annual Silver Key theme gala Sept. 9.

No black tie and cocktail dresses at these fundraisers; they're creatively fun and silly ways to relax while providing funds for Silver Key's assistance to more than 7,000 seniors. The evening raised $141,000 for the nonprofit's programs - Meals on Wheels, transportation, nutrition assistance, education and case management.

The importance of case management in this officially designated "age-friendly community" was a focus, especially in the video. Case manager Teon Horsey had guided a man who never imagined he would become his mother's caregiver. The son gave up his career and moved here when he discovered how his formerly healthy, active mother was failing. With Horsey's help, he found the many resources available to them, and the video shows a smiling woman living a fuller life again. And her caregiver son's smile matches hers.

Rockin' the Beach was planned by Carolann Modlin and Whitley Crow with their committee: Ann Edinger, Ann McKenzie, Anna Galindo, Becky Hurley, Beth O'Brien, Claire Anderson, Deb Mahan, Deb Risden, Denny Modlin, Elisa Santos, Elly Durham, Glena McPeters, Julie Cox, Laurie Onstott, Lorri Orwig, Lynda Eiermann and Paula Humber.

ViewPointe was the presenting sponsor. Gold sponsors were Brookdale at Skyline, Ent Credit Union, Investment Trust, Rocky Mountain PACE, Kirkpatrick Bank and Kaiser Permanente.

Gala goers voted on next year's theme, which will be announced later.
