Brother Luck, owner of Four by Brother Luck and the Colorado Springs contestant on "Top Chef" season 15, packed his knives at the end of the Elimination Challenge in Episode 6 last week. But he had no sooner done so then he was unpacking them to continue as a "cheftestant" in the reality show.
Here's a thumbnail of what went down for Luck on Thursday.
In the episode "Now That's a Lot of Schnitzel" during the Quickfire round, chefs were challenged to recreate some of their most complicated dishes from their own restaurant menus. The goal is to teach "simplicity" by having them trim the dishes to be cooked in 30 minutes.
Luck's deconstructed paella put him in the winner's circle. His dish was topped, though, by Christopher Scott's pepper pot shrimp, which won Scott immunity for the Elimination Challenge.
For that challenge, Keegan Gerhard, a famed German pastry chef in Denver, asked contestants to elevate German food and create a radler, a drink made of half beer and half fruit soda. Luck landed in the bottom of the pack with his Odell 90 Shilling chai tea radler paired with summer sausage egg roll with bok choy, apple and potato.
"It just didn't feel German at all," said judge Tom Colicchio.
Luck was asked to pack his knives and head to Last Chance Kitchen, where he competed against Tu David Phu who had packed his knives the week before.
The two were asked to create the best Colorado-style dish they could using ingredients from parts of a tree. Luck grabbed a fat pork chop and worked magic by incorporating the smoky essence from oak ash.
Colicchio said both chefs made pretty delicious food, but Luck had an easier time producing the dish. Phu struggled tremendously with finding plastic wrap, and that upset his plans a bit. (What also seemed to upset him was learning that Brother knew where the plastic wrap was and didn't bother to tell him.)
Luck had drawn a floor plan of the kitchen after Episode 1 to help his time management. Seems that strategy paid off.
Luck was declared the winner of the challenge and moves on to the next round on Episode 7 at 8 p.m. Thursday on Bravo.
