The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs will host its 28th annual Medal of Valor luncheon to honor police officers.

"The medal of valor is reserved for the best of the best, for officers who performed heroic life-saving actions," police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said.

The foundation will award 108 medals of valor to police officers for heroism during last year's Waldo Canyon Fire. Because of the cut-off date for nominations, the medal recipients had to wait until this year to be recognized, spokeswoman Nicole Magic explained.

The Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Award also will be awarded to officers who risked their lives on duty.

The Police Cross will be presented for Officer Matthew Tyner, who died in the line of duty July 24, 2012, in a motorcycle crash while on patrol.

Sponsors for the luncheon can register with the foundation until Oct. 30 and there are several levels of sponsorship and donations, Magic said. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can register online at or they can mail a check to Nicole Magic at 10 Lake Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.

The medals will be presented Nov. 4 at The Broadmoor hotel's Hall A and B, with a display of various vehicles and photographs from 10:45-11:45 a.m. The luncheon will begin at noon.
