Sayonara Shannara?

In 1977, Terry Brooks' bestseller, "The Sword of Shannara," drew legions of readers into a post-apocalyptic world ruled by magic and helped establish the fantasy genre as commercially viable. After 40 years and more than 30 Shannara prequels, sequels, spin-offs and short stories, Brooks returns to The Four Lands with the first in an epic four-book farewell tour. "The Black Elfstone: The Fall of Shannara" is due June 13 and should be available at local brick-and-mortar booksellers, including Hooked on Books (hookedonbooksco.com), by week's end. ~Stephanie Earls

Walk for a great cause

If you're wondering what you can do to fight the nation's No. 1 killer, cardiovascular disease, and No. 5 killer, stroke, all you have to do is walk - or donate to - the Colorado Springs Heart & Stroke Walk. On Saturday, June 3, teams will gather from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Weidner Field, where the Switchbacks play, to run or walk a 5K to raise money to fight the diseases and for a Heart Health & Wellness Expo. "This year, we expect over 4,000 adults and kids of all ages to come out to celebrate success, support the mission, learn about risk factors, and take a stand against heart disease and stroke," said Kathleen Saltmarsh-Voss, executive director of the local American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The cause is one that "could one day save the life of someone" you love, she added. To donate directly or register ($30 fee for the timed 5K run includes a T-shirt; the Heart Walk itself is free and open to the public), go to www.csheartwalk.com. ~Michelle Karas
