A recall election is underway for STAR Academy board president Al Loma. A parent from the K-8 charter school, Patricia Scotland, on Tuesday presented to the board 138 verified signatures on a petition for recall.
By their calculations, parents turned in signatures of 30 percent of parents enrolled at the school, which is higher than the 25 percent the bylaws require. The election must be completed in 45 days.
A previous attempt to present the petition on Feb. 25 failed because of a lack of quorum of the board. However, Colorado Springs School District 11's interpretation of the school's bylaws allowed for the presentation even without a quorum, which also was not fulfilled Tuesday, said board member Toby Norton.
Another election will be held in April to fill two seats that are term-limited, she said. Twelve parents want to be considered for the seats, according to Norton.
