A man who said he thought he heard someone breaking into his apartment building early Friday told police he returned fire after being shot at twice when he went to investigate.

No injuries were reported, Colorado Springs police said.

The resident said he heard the exterior door to his East Boulder Street home's common area break about 2:25 a.m., so he grabbed his gun and "went outside to investigate," police said. While in front of the fourplex turned into apartments, the man said an acquaintance who had been there earlier in the day fired at him twice from the passenger seat of a silver car.

The resident said he shot at the car several times as it was driving away.

He told police he did not know why the acquaintance would shoot at him.

Police said they did not find any nearby homes or vehicles damaged from the gunfire.

No suspects have been named.
