The Colorado State Patrol is looking for recruits for its next academy class, and preference will be given to in-state residents.

The patrol said Thursday that it is making it easier for Colorado applicants to stand out from the roughly 2,500 hopefuls who apply each year, about 20 percent of them coming from out of state, recruiter Sgt. Justin Mullins said.

"It gives Coloradans the opportunity to represent their own community," Mullins said.

Members of the military who are based out of Colorado and students are eligible.

Applications will be accepted starting Monday for the July 2018 academy class. There are typically 25-30 slots open per academy.
