Weekend entertainment in Colorado Springs and beyond: Lights, Irish music, free admission to state parks and Nutcrackers

A look at some of our favorite events happening this weekend around Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak region and beyond in Colorado.

FRIDAY

The Pueblo Riverwalk lights up for the holidays starting with festivities at 5 p.m.and ending the evening with fireworks. All through the season, there are floating evening rides with Santa and other costumed characters.

Heading up in the Denver direction this weekend? Two light-extravaganza holiday delights are opening: the twinkling Blossoms of Light covering the grounds of Denver Botanic Gardens through Jan. 1 and A Hudson Christmas at Hudson Gardens in Littleton through Dec. 31.

Head outdoors after turkey day for Fresh Air Friday, with free admission to all 41 state parks compliments of Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Great Outdoors Colorado.

They'll happily wish you "Céad Míle Fáilte" (100,000 welcomes) at Stargazer's Theatre as you arrive for the music and dance "Irish Christmas in America." This 2017 tour features Seamus Begley and Sligo's Niamh Farrell. Tickets $25 plus ticketing fee, $30 at the door for the 7 p.m. show.

Those giant, tumbledown structures dotting gold-rush era mining locations on hillsides all around Cripple Creek and Victor become lighted works of art and Christmas ornaments as part of the 20-year Holiday Headframe Lighting tradition. "The Nutcracker" season has arrived. This weekend, the Philharmonic and Oklahoma City Ballet; Friday-Saturday, a mini "Petite Nutcracker," Library 21c; Saturday-Dec. 24, Colorado Ballet in Denver; Nov. 30-Dec. 3, Sangre de Cristo Ballet, Pueblo; Dec.8-9, Moscow Ballet in Denver; Dec. 20-21, local Colorado Youth Ballet and Colorado Ballet Society.

Shopping fun and special treats all around the area, downtown and Old Colorado City for Small Business Saturday. Old Colorado City turns it into a costumed Christmas Stroll at 5 p.m.

Join the Colorado Springs Chorale in a Handel's "Messiah" Sing-Along as part of their holiday concert of seasonal selections, 7 p.m. Sunday, First Christian Church, 16 E .Platte Ave. Free-will offering.

SUNDAY

The bells are ringing with "A Symphony of Christmas" for the Pikes Peak Ringers' Holiday Concert, 3 p.m. at Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Ave. The Christmas special is repeated at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at Manitou's Community Congregational Church, 103 Pawnee Ave. Free-will offerings.
